Planetary Body Shader Part 1

In order to render my planetary bodies, I had to consider the following effects:

  • Texture
  • Lighting
  • Relief
  • Atmospheres
  • Clouds
  • Shadows

I'll discuss each of these in later posts, but for now here are some screenshots of the first attempt at rendering a planetary body using these effects.

Dave, that looks awesome - I love the planetary glow! Are we ever going to be able to get the source/binaries for this?

Hi Mike & Dan, thanks for the support :)
Currently I've no plans to release the code for this work, though that might change in the future. This is still very-much experimental work, for which I'm hoping this blog will serve both as a journal and as a mechanism to discuss the approach I'm taking.
